Since I have been sewing like a machine, I have made a lot of progress on cool pieces that I’ve had forever. This skirt is of course one of those things- I shortened it about 5 inches and made the waist just the tiniest bit bigger. It automatically caught my eye because of the colors, but I have been really lazy about my personal alterations so I’ve had it for ages. Anyway, today I thought I’d go for a contrasting stripes look with my accessories!

I got these amazing beauties at a yard sale for 50 cents! And it's no mystery to me why our store is painted in awesome color schemes like this.

WHERE: work at chicken and bike riding with the boy

WHEN: tuesday, june 1

I forgot to wear them today, but I’m really excited about the new shorts I got for wearing under all of my dresses when I ride my bike! I’m not about to start wearing pants all the time- besides, I very rarely sacrifice fashion for function and I don’t see why this would be any different. I promise they’ll make an appearance very soon!!

In my digging through some older pictures, I found a posts worth of pictures that I never put up! Last week the boy and I ventured out to Everybody’s Records to sell some of his vinyl that never gets played. Although it’s a bit peely, I really like their mural.

Actually in the last year or so ArtWorks, a local art non-profit group has been putting up some really incredible murals all around the city. This is my favorite one in Camp Washington just up the street from the old location of Chicken Lays an Egg.

"Campy Washington"

I’m so excited to see this move of more public art in the city. Recently Shepard Fairey even put up some of his wheat-paste pieces all over the city, and that to me seems crazy (in a good way). It makes Cincinnati feel like a real city!

This one is at the corner of 13th and Main St, in Over-the-Rhine, Cincinnati’s oldest neighborhood. Originally it was inhabited by poor German immigrants who referred to the rank canal that existed there at the time as the Rhine; as in the Rhine River that cuts across Western Germany. For the last thirty or more years though it has been a predominantly poor African American neighborhood, but gentrification is turning it into the ‘Gateway Quarter’ featuring million dollar lofts. Ugh. I’ve been reading a bunch of blogs about Cincinnati, so forgive me if I’m in the tour-giving mode. In all seriousness though, urban geography became a huge interest of mine when my brother and I took some classes about it together; it’s just so interesting to me what factors go into a neighborhood turning over.

Anyway, here’s what I wore to the record shop:

Whew! This has been a really fabulous whirlwind weekend for me, so I’m a few days behind on my posts. We had our first afternoon party and sale at Chicken Lays An Egg on Saturday and then I babysat all day today. I cannot WAIT to put up the pictures from the party, we had two of our photographer friends snapping pictures all day and they did suuuuuch an incredible job. Thanks Amy and Rachel, you guys did an amazing job!!

This post however is about how my wonderful friend Jeni really kick-started my love of blogging again. Jeni is an old friend of mine from high school and when we reconnected a few years ago, we really clicked. She is one of the strongest and smartest people I know. She’s so full of life and ready to do whatever fun requires, it makes me feel very lucky to be her friend. Jeni sent me this amazing package last week and it really made my week. She wrote me several really touching cards about how she reads the blog regularly and gave me some great tips on how to keep it fresh. It was especially cool because one of the cards she gave me was this awesome Charley Harper card; he was a very cool modern artist who specialized in wildlife portraits and coincidentally lived in Cincinnati! Here’s a little sampling of his stuff:

Anyway, her letter and everything really lifted me up and put me back in my groove. I actually immediately put on three of the things she sent me; a perfect mustard sweater, bracelet, and the ribbon she used to tie up some of my presents. Here’s how I started my day. Not bad, but nothing too special.

On my way out the door I saw her package, so when I opened it at the store this is what I threw together:

So much better!

It's so windy there!

How perfect is it that she tied up my present with a long white ribbon?!

Thanks for reading, there will be more very soon!

Earlier today the boy and I went out to look at a possible puppy to adopt, unfortunately it didn’t work out. We took Chopper out to meet him, and she was just having none of it. I dressed waaayy down today because Chops has a way of getting completely messy when she plays, and in turn getting me totally grubby. Of course she still managed to get my shoes pretty dirty, which are by far the best part of this outfit. Oh well, it cleaned right off!
