shop-o-mania

Every spring and fall my hometown, Williamsburg holds a town-wide yard sale. I’ve completely forgotten about the last few so I am so glad I was able to make it out for this one. Jacob and I had planned on driving out there Saturday morning but his car broke down again, so I was thinking it was pretty out of the question being that it’s almost an hour drive away from the city. Thankfully my best girl Maya and her boy Brendan were down for a little road trip adventure.

I would’ve taken more pictures along the drive but that just means you would’ve seen more of this exact same scene.

Ahhhh yeah- let’s make a deal!

This lady had sooo much good stuff. I bought like $20 worth from her.

Brendan and his fish.

I wish I could have cups like this, but every time I buy them they always end up broken in a month.

This Goodwill is the beginning of my love of thrift stores. As I mentioned, Williamsburg is a very small town and pretty much everybody we grew up with was more into mall clothes so we had the run of this Goodwill’s ironic t-shirts and vintage dresses. Among many other treasures I once got a perfect 1930 Royal typewriter with the case for $10 here. Obviously this was on my list of places that we had to stop at.

It must’ve been our lucky day too because as you may see on the sign behind my head, everything in the store was 50% off!

That’s all I’ve got of now, but I will be back again very very soon with TONS of exciting news…

jackpot!

Being the owner of a small business, it always makes me happy to support other small businesses. The ultimate jackpot for me is when I find a really fabulous vintage store, especially since they’re pretty much all locally owned and often owner-operated. A few days ago I rediscovered an incredible little vintage shop named Downtown Nostalgic that I fell in love with years ago. My mom and I were eating lunch across the street and I just happened to notice that their door was open and they had a sale rack outside – lucky me! Of course that meant that I had to inhale my food so I could go look around. Unfortunately I wasn’t expecting to adventure, so I hadn’t borrowed Maya’s camera. Luckily my mom has an iPhone, so I was able to use that.

This is just the front room!

So many beautiful bags and hats to drool over…

Bkuwzyjk- holy jewelry overload!!

Aaaannndd, if you’re looking for a little something for the dapper guy in your life, then she’s got you covered on that too. She has some really incredible men’s pieces for around $20, and if you’ve ever shopped for men’s vintage you know how hard it can be to find good stuff. My theory on that is that men just keep their clothes until they disintegrate, especially if they’re cool. Look at that stuff!

She’s even got a spot for the friend you dragged with you to collapse in.

All in all a really great little shop, and the owner, Ocie is just the sweetest woman. It’s located on Calhoun Street in Clifton, right by Urban Outfitters. Since she has a day job they are only open when she can be there, which can be a bit sporadic. You can call 513.861.9336 for information about that though. Check ‘em on Yelp too! They’re just getting started online so right now their only review is from me, but would I lie??

This is the super-cute top I got from Downtown. I got a really adorable little floral housecoat that I’m gonna rock as a dress. I’ll make sure to post some pics of that soon!

It was my Grampa’s 86th birthday, so after vintagemania we went to go visit my grandparents. Isn’t it crazy how much my mom and Gramma look alike? I know, I look just like ‘em too.

I definitely inherited a lot of style from my Gramma. For most of her life she made her own clothes and was always done up in something fabulous – never afraid to take some fashion risks. When she was younger she had a little red truck (just like me!) and she made little chicken curtains for it. When I was little she had a lot of names for me, depending on her mood; Minerva (when I was being stubborn), Sadie Sue (when she’s in a good mood), and of course Jessy Sue. She is always made up her own words for stuff too, like adventuring is “hooleyhackin”. She’s just always been really goofy and fun, and definitely the grandparent I am closest with. <3

As for what I was wearing…. I had kind of a flapper thing going on that day.

My beloved gold bag

For some reason the women in my family have taken pictures of themselves like this for generations. I was trying to find some of the ones of my Gramma and her sisters in the same pose, but no luck. Oh well!

As some of you may know, my brother is currently living in Seoul, Korea teaching English to elementary school students. It’s great for him not only because he’s great with kids, but also because this job can be for paying off student loans. You get paid pretty well and they pay for most of your living costs, plus you get to live abroad. We’ve had a few friends who’ve done this in the past, but a very good friend of ours, Melissa went over a year before him and helped him get over. Melissa is one of the most wacky, random, hilarious, good-hearted, and fun people I’ve ever met in my life. One day she just started calling herself Mommy and it really stuck, so that’s pretty much how most of her friends know her now. Well, because she is also really impulsive she randomly quit her job in May and flew back to Cincinnati so that she could go to her brother’s wedding. It was great to have her back for the summer, but she has gone back to Korea now. I was very happy that we at least got to spend her birthday with her before she left.

Mommy prefers a low-key, hole in the wall type place, so we went to Arnold’s to listen to some jugband-style blugrass. Arnold’s is the oldest bar in the city, and the perfect bar to have a beer and enjoy the courtyard.

While we were out that night I realized that the very first outfit post I ever did on my blog was from her birthday, so I knew I had to make a tradition of it.

All of us ladies

She never saw it coming.

Last year for her birthday we played bocce ball, which was a first for me.

All in all a fabulous night with my two best ladies! I hope I magically get to spend her birthday with her next year. Maybe I’ll have to go to Korea…..
