so much vintage to buy and so little money to do it with

I’m not quite sure why the timing was so serendipitous, but in the last month I’ve had 4 or 5 people I know approach me with large amounts of beautiful vintage things that they’re selling. Luckily Dana, Maya and I all went in together on the largest lot of clothes that belonged to a woman who had been a Playboy bunny in the 1960′s. When this woman liked something, she bought it in every color and kept everything she owned in pristine condition. So that was a great score for us, and then a few people I knew had stellar yard sales so my personal wardrobe has seriously grown. The other big score for me was that I got to go check out the liquidation sale for Modern Megpie. You may recognize her shop most recently from a giveaway on Orchid Grey. I actually knew her online store before I met her and didn’t realize she lived in Cincinnati. Since it is a pretty small town we have mutual friends and she ended up doing some refreshments for the clothing swap I helped put on back in the spring. I went to her house last week and picked out some really great stuff for super cheap in between petting her adorable and crazy sweet dog and chatting with her about moving to Switzerland.

I also have an appointment this weekend to go look at some other guy’s huge collection before he moves to California. We’ll see how it goes. This week I started working a semi-regular job again, and the timing couldn’t be better. I only say semi-regular due to my only working 2 nights a week and it’s way more fun than any other job I’ve ever had. I don’t consider working at Chicken Lays An Egg a job, not only because I don’t get paid hourly but also because I love being there. If you are ever in Cincinnati though, you should absolutely, without a doubt check out NorthSlice Pizza. Not only do you get the chance of having me serve you, it’s the best pizza in the city hands down. We have all fresh, mostly local toppings and even offer vegan pizzas. It can’t be beat, I promise.

Anyway, to get back to all the vintage opportunities I’ve had lately, I got a bunch of really incredible jewelry from my friend Jen. Her grandmother recently passed away and let me tell you- that lady had some taste! My favorite piece is probably the wooden parrot necklace, but I got some truly unique pieces such as a real gold covered horseshoe crab made into a brooch. (I meant real horseshoe crab, but it’s real gold too.)

For real though- how great is this necklace? I wore this little tropical number to the Cincinnati Latino Festival.

I thought this cool tropical skirt went well with it even though that’s totally a toucan and not a parrot on the front of it.

Fun and comfy! It was a pretty fun festival and I would’ve taken some pictures but I was actually there as an extra set of hands with the family I babysit for so I had to focus on toddlers instead. That was pretty fun too though.

WHAT: parrot necklace, jen’s gramma

red t, rainbow

white leather belt, chicken lays an egg

jungle skirt, thrifted and altered by me

WHERE: cincy latino fest and babysitting

WHEN: sunday, september 26

one year BLOGIVERSARY!

I can’t believe that I almost missed it, but today is the one year anniversary of my blog!!

I’ve had a really great time doing everything with my blog; it’s the first thing that I feel like I’ve ever really done wholeheartedly for myself and followed through on. In the next year I plan on doing a lot of really exciting things, including an online version of Chicken Lays An Egg. I just found out that my mom, in one of the best acts of kindness I’ve had in a long time, bought me a DSLR and a sewing machine. I must say that I am ridiculously excited about all the possibilities that these could both bring me. I hope to start doing more serious alterations and upcycling of clothes from the shop and selling them in said online store. So thank you so much for being such fantastic, faithful readers and please keep reading. I can’t wait to share the coming days of my life with you!

shop-o-mania

Every spring and fall my hometown, Williamsburg holds a town-wide yard sale. I’ve completely forgotten about the last few so I am so glad I was able to make it out for this one. Jacob and I had planned on driving out there Saturday morning but his car broke down again, so I was thinking it was pretty out of the question being that it’s almost an hour drive away from the city. Thankfully my best girl Maya and her boy Brendan were down for a little road trip adventure.

I would’ve taken more pictures along the drive but that just means you would’ve seen more of this exact same scene.

Ahhhh yeah- let’s make a deal!

This lady had sooo much good stuff. I bought like $20 worth from her.

Brendan and his fish.

I wish I could have cups like this, but every time I buy them they always end up broken in a month.

This Goodwill is the beginning of my love of thrift stores. As I mentioned, Williamsburg is a very small town and pretty much everybody we grew up with was more into mall clothes so we had the run of this Goodwill’s ironic t-shirts and vintage dresses. Among many other treasures I once got a perfect 1930 Royal typewriter with the case for $10 here. Obviously this was on my list of places that we had to stop at.

It must’ve been our lucky day too because as you may see on the sign behind my head, everything in the store was 50% off!

That’s all I’ve got of now, but I will be back again very very soon with TONS of exciting news…
