I was really happy with how well this outfit came out! I hardly ever wear this pencil skirt, but combined with the cropped sleeve jacket, gloves, and tiny pillbox handbag it makes the perfect old lady style classic outfit. And I love this coat so much- it’s vintage  and locally made! I got it for free years ago and was very pleased to later find out that it was made by the now-defunct Cincinnati brand, Sincerely Jenny.

I really love the detail on this shirt too.

In my ever-increasing days off, I have actually had time to hang out with my wonderful boyfriend and do all the stuff we’ve been meaning to do for months and months. Of course it also helps that we have a mobile car again, hopefully my poor truck will be back on the road soon too! I’m really excited for all this time mostly because it means that I’ll have more time to devote to our store, Chicken Lays An Egg. I would like to look into having stock available on our website, but I still have some logistical issues to work out if we did do that. Thank you so much to all the very sweet people who have inquired though! If you do live in Cincinnati or just want to see some of our stock, become a fan of our Facebook page. I upload pictures of almost every new piece that comes into the shop. I also want to do a giveaway from Chicken Lays An Egg to a reader – any requests on what to give away? I was considering jewelry or a bag possibly…. Leave me a comment and let me know what you’d like to have!

Since I had Monday off, Jacob and I went out to play at Ikea. I say ‘play’ because we always end up having a really good time messing with everything and mocking ridiculous things that no one needs, which Ikea has no shortage of. Although, we were actually there to pick up some more pieces for my massive and ever-expanding closet. I cannot wait until he has time to put it together, I’ll finally have some storage for off season clothes. It also gave me a chance to debut my new favorite skirt from H&M and cool vintage pillbox bag from Chicken Lays An Egg! I love them both so much, and I can predict that you’ll see a lot of them in the coming weeks.

EDIT:

After I posted this entry, I found this picture in my Iphoto. Talk about subliminal inspiration!

This picture doesn't even get close to capturing how saturated the colors get in the light and the shimmer of the fabric.

Oh little yellow bag, you're so adorable.

This weekend I went out with my best girlie (my business partner and roommate) to celebrate the quitting of my job! It had gotten to the point where I was being ridiculously over-managed and spied on by my boss, and I just won’t put up with that crap. I am however very sad to leave this good of a job- fantastic pay, great benefits, and it could be very fun at times. I just have too much self-respect to be told how many times a day I’m allowed to go to the bathroom at this age. So I will be going back to my old job as a preschool teacher pretty soon, which I am really excited about. But the thing I’m really excited about is having time off!! I’ll be working fewer hours and I’ll always be off on weekends- what an exciting prospect! Now I’ll have the time to put into all the things I love, especially the blog.

Maya and I had a great time shopping yesterday, and we got some really amazing stuff. We finally got an H&M store here in Cincinnati, and in an evil plot to make me spend a bunch of money, they put it right next door to the Forever 21. Bastards. The biggest score of the day by far came when I strolled over to the shoe section of Forever 21 and saw the platform Chloe boot knockoffs that I thought were totally sold out!!! Of course they only had 2 pairs and they were both size 6, and I wear a 7 1/2. Somehow though the shoe gods were smiling on me and they fit. So of course I had to wear them out as soon as possible.

I really love these sleeves.

And since Maya was looking so cute in her new duds, I had to include her too. You would not believe how differently Maya dressed when I met her almost 6 years ago! She wore only darker earth tones, no bright colors, very simple silver jewelry only, and never heels. I am so proud of how much she’s branched out, especially lately.

Following the lead of many of my favorite blogger gals, I’ve been using song lyrics in the absence of good post titles. This one is from my favorite Tom Waits song, Ninth & Hennepin a spoken word poem about a the saddest, grittiest dive bar. Classic Tom Waits. The piano I posed with in this post reminded me of the broken lilting piano part in Ninth & Hennepin. I was really excited to find this piano in an alley we were walking through on the way to the bar, it made the perfect backdrop!

I really love the texture of this wrap sweater. It's actually made to be a bolero-style front tie sweater for a lady much larger than me, so it wraps all the way around me!

I have been trying to keep from shopping too much, so I allowed myself to spend a little at a recent trip to Fashion Cents and picked up this number. I don’t usually go for tan items, mostly because I forget how well it matches everything else. So I was pleasantly surprised when I started playing around with it and some of my accessories. This particular outfit I just kind of threw together so I could wear my red tights. Alas, right after I took these my puppy jumped up on me and ripped a giant hole in the leg. C’est la vie. That’s why I absolutely cannot justify spending any more than $10 on a pair of tights.

I love this little camera! If you look into the viewfinder, this is what you see, and every time you click the shutter, a new animal comes up. I’m kind of surprised that these came out this well.

I’m especially stoked about this dress because it completes my girl scout uniform Halloween costume! I blatantly stole the idea from Calivintage‘s costume this year, and as you can see her execution was totally perfect, per usual for Erin. I’m obviously channeling this costume already with my shoe choice!

As you may be able to tell, I’ve been listening to a lot of MGMT today. I can’t help it, whenever I’m in an excited-for-no reason kind of good mood (especially on a nice day) all I want to listen to is MGMT and Matt & Kim. And this is probably the most gorgeous day we’ve had so far this year! I decided to play hookie, so I called in sick and went on a super long walk with the boy and puppies. It was the longest walk that the little one has ever been on, so needless to say they’re both passed out on the couch cuddling.

It’s amazing what a 60 degree day can do for every one’s attitude! I saw that Mayday, a favorite Cincinnati bar, is having half price drinks tonight and decided immediately to go. I wouldn’t have even considered going out on a weekday before today, but it’s a beautiful day, everyone is in a great mood, and that’ll make for some cheap ass drinks, so out we go!

I was having such a good time on our walk that when I saw this giant tree, I decided I’d take a note from The Clothes Horse and my childhood self and climb on up. I think had been years since I climbed a tree, and that just seemed wrong to me somehow.

However, me being in a tree was seriously distressing my poor pup, Chopper.

So much whining!

So I came down and we walked on through the park some more. The park right by my apartment, Burnet Woods, encompasses an entire city block so you can waste some serious time there.

Everything I’m wearing today is new actually, the skirt is Bebe, but I got in one of the Nashville thrift stores for $3! And awesomely the scarf that I just grabbed from Chicken Lays An Egg matched the pink perfectly.

I really like this scarf especially because of the square polka dots, I feel like you don’t see that too often.

I had to wear the bird ring of course. Those things just match everything!

Not that I like bird jewelry or anything.

I love my new belt, the square in the middle actually turns to lock. It's unlocked in this one.

Oh, I just happened to pick up the March issue of Vogue, and saw an ad for the Jean Paul Gaultier for Target line. My roommate and I are going to drive out this week- I can’t wait to go out and see it in person! I wandered over to Target.com and skimmed the collection, and I already found some things that I know will be coming home with me!

Since I got so many awesome skirts in Nashville, it hasn’t been too hard for me to put together some pretty decent combos. However, I realize that I’ve been building outfits around one piece a little too completely, such as this outfit. It’s the lazy thing that I am tempted to do constantly. Don’t get me wrong, I really like the simplicity of it in a way, but I want to branch out more and challenge myself.

The bummer about this outfit was that the t-shirt I chose kept stretching out more and more, so by the end of the day my sleeves were down past the end of my hands! (Hence the hands in pockets pose.)

Apparently, I’ve been getting a lot more traffic lately thanks to the lovely Keiko Lynn! I found a little bow necklace at my store that just seemed to fit her aesthetic, so I sent it to her. I’m so glad that she likes it! Thanks to Keiko Lynn and welcome new readers!

Well, here’s the last of my Nashville thrift and vintage store review! I would like to do one for Cincinnati, although I do have an obvious bias to our store.

Our first stop is Katy K’s Ranch Dressing, which I first heard about from Bust magazine’s Around The World In 80 Girls feature. In it, they highlight a city and mention a few of the places that are must-sees. Lucky for me, I save every issue I buy and remembered that they hit Nashville in a past issue! Anyway, Katy K’s was pretty awesome, and definitely a must-see.

They’re known for outfitting Nashville’s finest country royalty, and I see why. Rhinestones and embroidery as far as the eye can see!

For the tiniest, most adorable cowboy ever.

Jacob found a shirt exactly like one he owns!

Overall, Katy K’s was fun to see, but overpriced for something I’m in the market for. I totally recommend checking it out though, especially since it’s right down the street from a bunch great vintage stores on 12th Avenue. Speaking of which, if you drive about a mile down 12th, you’ll see Savant Vintage Couture on your right. Stop immediately and park.

I wish I had taken more pictures, but I was honestly in shock. Their store is almost as packed as mine ours, but twice as big! And while I definitely got some sticker shock when I looked at the prices, they had some gorgeous items; I had a constant huge smile on my face the whole time. And even better the owner and the clerk working were both really friendly and welcoming. I was wearing my super bright outfit that day and they were totally digging it. We chatted about Cincinnati and Nashville for a little and they even suggested some bars we might like. I was running low on funds by this point, so I didn’t even really let myself shop. But I loved the print of this dress that I saw there soooo much!

Right around the corner from Savant on Linden Avenue is Local Honey, which was also mentioned in the Bust article.

There is a very sweet vibe about this place, and they had some pretty cute stuff too.

Their prices were a little high for me (skirts at $20), but they had some really adorable upcycled dresses for $50, which I thought was a pretty good price, especially for all the tailoring. The biggest bummer about Local Honey however was that the guy working there was really rude. I was in a pretty good mood and shot him a very friendly “hi!” when I walked in, he unenthusiastically returned the greeting with a snotty “hi” and returned to his book. I brushed it off, but when I asked if it was OK to take some pictures for my blog (out of politeness mostly), he got kind of an attitude with me. I mean he said it was fine, it was just the way he did so. He kind of laughed and rolled his eyes in this ‘yeah, whatever’ way. I don’t know, the whole exchange just bummed me out and made me feel stupid.

Last but not least, we stumbled across Flashback Vintage. We were actually trying to go to a soda shop down the street, but before we got there I saw this place from across the street. It looked a little dated from the outside, but was actually fantastic!

I was still on the hunt for a fur collar at this point, so I just happened to ask the woman working if they had any. I’m so glad I did because she immediately lead me over to a giant box they had stashed under a rack of coats! I’m not even kidding, my body could have fit in this box. Needless to say I was so happy I almost did a little dance. And best of all, the prices were really decent. I wish I hadn’t found this place so late in my trip, I would have spent way more money there. I found a beautiful lamb’s wool collar that I chose because it didn’t feel super furry. I don’t know if that makes any sense the way I worded it, but I personally can’t handle the feeling of fox or anything like that on my skin. I just feel like I’m wearing someone’s pet. Anyway, I was really happy with the one I got and the very sweet clerk even gave me a bit of a discount! Overall, a surprise treasure!

That brought an end to our shopping in Nashville, mostly because we were almost out of money. I learned once I got home that I missed a few vintage stores, so I guess I’ll have to go back and hit ‘em all! The ones I didn’t get a chance to go to were The Hip Zipper, Clothing Xchange, Venus and Mars which all look awesome!

While I haven’t been holding up my end of the blogging lately, I’ve been surprising myself with the ease I’ve been choosing outfits. I was really glad to finally get to wear this vest that my mom gave me for Christmas. I love how fitted it is, and it goes so well with the extra flowy sleeves on my new shirt! And even better, the little metallic flecks woven into it are both gold and silver.

I love how huge these sleeves are!
