Last year I started a new tradition in my group of friends by deciding I wanted to do Thanksgiving in a way that would be more fun. So I told my family I wasn’t coming, and cooked dinner for a bunch of my friends. I was really happy that the tradition continued again this year, and even more people came!

While everyone was eating I started looking around the room and I noticed how totally cute all my ladies looked, so after dinner I asked if they’d pose for some pictures. I wish I’d have thought to get individual shots too. Oh well, next time! So here are some of my favorite ladies and myself!

Wednesday Addams pretty much summed up my feelings about Thanksgiving,

“You have taken the land which is rightfully ours. Years from now my people will be forced to live in mobile homes on reservations. Your people will wear cardigans, and drink highballs. My people will have pain and degradation. Your people will have stick shifts. And for all these reasons I have decided to scalp you and burn your village to the ground.”

Not that I don’t love it when people give me hot, free, delicious food, especially since my diet consists mostly of cereal. I just hate all the running around. This year the boy and I had 5 Thanksgivings to attend, including one we threw for our friends, but it was all a lot of fun. It was really nice to meet the boy’s extended family too. For exactly that reason, I chose a pretty plain outfit by my standards so as not to completely weird them out on our first meeting. Also of course went for comfort with my jersey knit tent dress. No tight pants here! And my new tiny gold pocket watch, which I have worn everyday since I got it. Without further ado…

Then, at about 2:30 in the morning, my brother and I decided that Waffle House was in order. So we drove over the bridge to Kentucky, land of Waffle House, cheap cigs, and smoking INSIDE! I opted for a little more casual outfit for that.

I have to admit I was weakened by my proximity to Forever 21 earlier today and was further weakened when I saw this little beauty. I did something I never do and bought it without trying it on and luckily, it worked out! It was also suuuuper comfortable, however I promise you I will not be continuing this trend of lazy little one piece outfits. I also got this really cool 2 finger bird ring. I actually was into it so much I bought it in both black and white.

Also Maya and I just finished the holiday window for the store, come by and check it out!

Well lovelies, the last few days have been a complete blur of pricing and steaming all the beautiful pieces I recently got. It was totally worth all my sweat though, everything is priced and in the store, so come by! Here are just some of the things I got. Click on the thumbnails to view full size images.

Well, faithful readers, I hope for your sake you are in Cincinnati. Mostly because I just became the owner of some of the best vintage clothes I’ve seen in a looooong time. I had a fantastic shopping day today. Maya and I hit up a rummage sale, and then after I closed up, I went and got some truly incredible vintage pieces from a girl leaving the country. And not just womens’ stuff either! I absolutely cannot WAIT to get it all priced and in the store!

Also, tonight was the opening of a very cool new space, Fabricate. It is a gallery, boutique and an arts and crafts supply store; and every month the gallery will feature a new exhibition, which will open alongside a band and/or a DJ. I stopped by the opening tonight for a minute, and I was really impressed. I’m so glad to have a shop like this in Cincy! Go check it out! It’s in Northside at 4016 Hamilton Ave (inside Red Polly).

Today I debuted a dress I got a few months ago, but never got around to wearing it. I love the zipper roses, but I’m not wild about the bottom. I’m thinking about cutting it off and making it a tent style top. Hmmm… I have to say, as hard as I am on tights, these have held up remarkably well. I can’t wait to buy more, but when I went to the H&M opening here, they didn’t really have any. Maya was looking pretty darn cute herself, so I grabbed her when she stopped in the store. Now we just need to get one of us with our fabulous other business partner, Dana!

Thanks for reading, have a good day!

Since yesterday was my very sweet, handsome boyfriend’s birthday we went out with a few friends to our favorite restaurant, the always delicious Rio Grande. It’s this little Mexican place with unbelievably cheap and awesome food and GIANT margaritas. If you live in Cincinnati and have never been there, you are doing yourself a serious disservice.

Anyway, the best part of the evening was definitely him opening the little plush Cthulhu I made for him. Cthulhu, if you’ve never heard of him, is a mythical evil sea monster guy from and H.P. Lovecraft story. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cthulhu)

As you can see from the picture, that night I debuted my little pink ballerina dress, gray scarf, and saddle shoes. It was the same outfit I posted a week or so ago when I bought that dress, so I didn’t think I needed to redo it.

I went for warmth today since there was a pretty nasty wind. I love how the color of this sweater looks on me, but I hardly ever wear it. I have a bad habit of forgetting that I own sweaters due to the fact that I have to keep all my heavy stuff like that in my living room closet. The dinky hanging one I have in my room is always about to collapse as it is. Tangent. Anyway, as much as I love the pocket watch necklace I’m wearing, it is a perfect example of why I usually don’t shop at Urban Outfitters. It cost almost $25, which is honestly way more than I usually pay for jewelry, but I loved it so I bought it. Less than a month after I got it, it stopped keeping time, and then shortly after that the second hand just fell off and now lies in the bottom of the face. Annoying. But I do totally love the funky closure on the leather belt I’ve got on, and I got it for $1! And I got the jacket for free!

My dog, Chopper gets really jealous when I ignore her when I’m posing as you can see.

I thought I’d do a little post about other ladies that I get outfit inspiration from and are generally awesome. Most recently I flipped about the ever-fabulous M.I.A.’s shark attack dress. She just has such great, fun, and funky style. She never takes herself too seriously; and I think that’s a really important quality as a human, not to mention as a fashionista. And she makes fuckin’ awesome music. Total badass.

This isn’t anyone I know, my boy just sent it to me when he happened to run across it. But it’s in the same vein as M.I.A.’s.

And what kind of little bloggin’ girl would I be if I didn’t mention the fabulous Audrey Hepburn? I just found out about her and her pet deer recently, and I have to say, I was entranced. She was working on the set of Green Mansions, 1959 with this little guy Pippin, and they apparently just bonded. He lived with her on and off for a year, and went everywhere with her. Another amazing facet of Miss Hepburn.

Had an easy day today at the store, so I just went for comfort. I started the day in these very cute two-tone mary janes, but after a few hours I had to change. They’re just a little too big. Needless to say, I was pretty stoked that we had just gotten in a pair of low top Chucks! After I closed up I had some fun playing around in the dressing room, which is one of my favorite parts of our store…

Last night Maya, Amy, and I went out to Mayday (the former Gypsy Hut) for the cd release party of The Minor Leagues, a really great local Cincinnati band. You can check em out at http://www.minorleaguesmusic.com/

We ran all around Northside and had a fantastic little night on the town. Since Chicken Lays An Egg just signed up for a collaborative ad with Mayday, (as well as Sidewinder, Bughouse Video, Melt, and possibly Shake It Records) Maya and I were eager to meet Kim and Vanessa the new owners of Mayday and Sidewinder. They were as sweet and fun as I could have hoped for and I hope to do a lot of business with them in the future. Support your local female small business owners and go check out Mayday, it still has all the things you love about the old Gypsy Hut but better!

Anyway, here’s what I wore; I only wish I had gotten better ones of Amy and Maya’s adorable outfits too.  Sorry for the image quality on some of these!

And today I have an easy day of hanging with Max and Vivi, the kids I’ve been babysitting for most of their lives, so we’ve got a definite rapport. See you again soon!

I was just looking through some old blog posts by my brother, the hillbilly tycoon, when I saw this one about our family. I thought it was so gritty, true, and beautiful. Dan and I have definitely always been the odd ones out in my family. We don’t aspire to live in the suburbs and have a bunch of mediocre crap that we work constantly do get; and that supremely confuses our family. Any kind of behavior that they don’t understand becomes automatically suspicious (which is why they all think my unemployed boyfriend is a drug dealer). So here’s pretty much what any gathering is like on that side of the family….

Thanksgiving in New Richmond

When are you ever graduating? my aunt asked me from under those crayon eyebrows
a mixing bowl of green jello fluff is passed
a family favorite that horrified my Jewish New Jersey ex at first
so appallingly goyishe
evidently
it is: jello, cool whip, and canned pineapple
evidence of my disputed Midwestern-ness
this family never fails
to piss me off
dad is wearing the cosby-show sweater his ex-mother-in-law gave him when i was five
his Holiday uniform for the last decade

Next Spring. i answer
muddy workboots stacked by the door near my chair
the neglected labrador begs for scraps from the porch with his eyes
staring through the sliding door
these people think they have arrived now that my uncle built this new house
but they still drink orange Big K
shoot deer
never travel
don’t read
and think sophistication comes from a car dealership
my childhood remembers as a cornfield

What is your degree going to be in again?
History. i answer
What are you gonna do with that? she frowns
stupidly i joke, Good question!
an intended segue for explaining my grand plan to take over the world using my brain
Well you should have figured that out before you started! she interrupts
dumb bitch has no idea what i do
all she knows is nursing and driving an hour to waste money at the nearest mall
i try to explain about fellowships
graduate programs
tenure
my family eyes me suspiciously over their cranberries and green bean casserole
none of this is registering
You know your cousin really likes his new job in Chicago. she reminds me
he was the Junior Fair King
the heartthrob of 4-H camp
my uncle paid for his O.U. business degree building rich people’s bathrooms and sunporches
we are not as rich as they
my dad can only give me his sweat
when there’s heavy moving
ruptured pipes
or a dead car on the side of the highway
my trust fund is knowledge about how to dig holes expertly

my aunt talks about her new job in Kenwood
she likes it better than her old job at the hospital
doesn’t have to drive through
the ‘slums of Clifton’
my sister and i shoot incensed looks at each other
we have both worked our asses off to live there

i give up on these people
their provincial smugness too stupid to be angry about
i orbit in universes they cannot dream of
my superficial poverty more apparent than their wants
but so much richer
“Get in the car Miss Ceely!”

they will be even more flabbergasted when they hear
that i want to move to the Third World
